Location:  Near the Sangre de Cristo Conference Center, Chupadero, NM

Subject:  Female hiker

Teams Responding:  Santa Fe SAR

Mission Summary:  Subject went hiking alone in the afternoon.  When she did not return by 19:00 the staff requested assistance from NMSP.  Teams were being called out when the subject was located and was returning to the Center in good condition.

Subject:  Male Hiker

Teams Responding:  Atalaya SAR, Santa Fe SAR, Los Alamos Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Los Alamos Ski Patrol & K-9, Cibola SAR, Taos SAR, Los Alamos Amateur Radio Club

Mission Summary:  Subject reported hiking on Dale Ball Trail and was overdue.  He was contacted by cell phone and he stated that he had hiked from Dale Ball Trailhead to Atalaya Mountain then to Thompson Peak then to Santa Fe Ski Area.  He caught a ride home from the Ski Area.

Subject:  Two young girls

Teams Responding:  Los Alamos Amateur Radio Club

Mission Summary:  Two girls, ages 7 and 11, were last seen at 07:30 and were reported missing to Los Alamos PD about 08:30.  SAR resources requested at 12:17 by LAPD and call received by IC about 13:35.  The girls were located at a neighbor’s house before resources were activated.

Subject:  11 male hikers

Teams Responding:  Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Posse, NM SnoBreakers, Los Alamos Ski Patrol & K-9, Santa Fe SAR, Sangre de Cristo SAR, Mountain Canine Corp, Los Alamos Amateur Radio Club

Mission Summary:  Two subjects decided to return home and left the remaining hikers.  They rest decided they were not up to the hike that was planned and sent one member for help.  SAR teams went into the location and hauled the hikers out.

Location:  Lake Katherine, Pecos Wilderness

Subject:  66 year old female hiker

Teams Responding:  Santa Fe SAR, Atalaya SAR, St John’s College SAR, Los Alamos Amateur Radio Club

Mission Summary:  The subject was on a day hike with the Sierra Club in the Lake Katherine area.  She became weak and passed out three times.  Team leader hike to Wilderness gate and called for assistance.  Due to the condition of the subject, it was deemed necessary to airlift her out.  This was accomplished by the NM National Guard Blackhawk helicopter.

Location:  Near County Road 56C, west of the Santa Fe Airport

Subject:  Two women in a 4WD vehicle

Teams Responding:  NM Helicopter 606

Mission Summary:  The subjects reported to NMSP that they were 4 wheeling when their vehicle became stuck in the mud.  Before the officer could get any additional information, the subject’s cell phone went dead.  NMSP aircraft 606 was activated by the officer and they rescued the women and took them to the Santa Fe Airport.

Location:  Hyde Park Picnic area near Santa Fe

Subject:  Two teenage hikers

Teams Responding:  None

Mission Summary:  Mother reported that the two teenagers had walked away from the picnic area and had been gone about 30 minutes.  She was so hysterical that there was no way to reason with her so a search was initiated.  Before any resources could be called, the hikers returned.

Location:  Trailer-Strong City Religious Community, Clayton, NM

Subject:  Female hiker

Mission Summary:  Subject left on a hike at 14:00 3/5/2007.  When she did not return at dark the community began search of compound.  Clayton Police and Union County Sheriff’s Office, NMSP were all notified between 24:00 and 5:45.  Mission was begun and about 7:45 the subject was found asleep in a trailer on the Compound grounds.

Location:  Area north and east of Hermit’s Peak, north of Las Vegas, NM

Subject:  Male and female hikers

Mission Summary:  The subjects hiked to another area after they made it to Hermit’s Peak.  It got dark and they spent the night in the wilderness.  They began walking east on trails toward Highway 518 and were found by a containment team at the trailhead.

Subject:  Father and son hunters

Mission Summary:  Subject call wife on cell phone and said they were lost.  Found an abandoned cabin and were warm and dry for the night.  He and son resumed hunting at dawn and were found by Officer Vigil as they drove out of the search area.

Subject:  Family of four hikers

Mission Summary:  Hikers were disoriented and lost.  Snow obscured the trail and when they were located all were snowed in until the following day.

Subject:  Female rabbit hunter

Mission Summary:  Subject had a fight with her boyfriend and decided to walk back to town.  She got lost and called for help on cell phone just before it died.  Sheriff’s Office searched for 8 hours before notifying NMSP.  Her tracks had been obscured by SO vehicles.  Subject was located in good condition.

Subject:  Male, possible suicide

Mission Summary:  Subject was reported missing by his family.  He was thought to be in Last Chance Canyon or near Sitting Bull Falls.   After extensive search, no clues were found and mission was closed

Mission Summary:  Subject did not report for work after holiday weekend.  A search was initiated and subject was found deceased at the trail junction.

Mission Summary:  Resources had been called out by SP before FC was advised of search.  When SAR resources began arriving, SP called subject’s house and the subject answered the phone.  He was not aware a search for him was being conducted.

Subject:  Elderly female

Mission Summary:  Elderly woman reported missing in urban area.  Before teams were deployed, a man called Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch and reported that a woman had entered his yard and asked for transportation to the Mexico border.  The citizen gave her a ride to the International Bridge so mission was closed since it was presumed the subject was in Mexico.

Mission Summary:  Subject called a friend in Dexter, NM saying he was in the Organs somewhere near Baylor Canyon Rd and he was injured.  Teams were sent over Baylor Pass and up Stone Horse Canyon with negative results.  Mission was suspended due to lack of  PLS/LKP.  Additional investigation suggested the subject might be in White Sands National Monument.  The subject self extracted and mission was close.

Mission Summary:  Subjects were hiking Pine Tree Trail and got caught by darkness.  One of them called 911 and they were found by NASA Fire Dept. personnel.  Both were in good condition.

Mission Summary:  Vehicles were checked for stranded people with negative results.  Vehicle owners were contacted by NMSP.  There were not stranded vehicle owners on the road.  Mission was closed

Mission Summary:  Subject and 3 friends were walking from the Crest Parking Lot to the restaurant.  The subject was tired and cold and having trouble making progress in deep snow.  One medical team was sent to contact and assess the subject.  He was ambulatory and team walked subject to tram.

Mission Summary:  Subjects missed the last switchback at top of La Luz…climb limestone bands.  They became stuck when in proved too difficult.  Rescue required high angle rescue.  Once lowered it was a six minute hike out.

Mission Summary:  Hikers contacted BC Sheriff’s Office for assistance since they had lost the trail and it was getting dark.  They then found the marker for South Sandia Crest Trail and Pino Canyon Trail.  IC advised them to stay where they were and sent teams to the location.  The subjects did not have a map or compass.

Mission Summary:  Subject left his house in Los Lunas about 7:30 or 8:00.  He was found in Albuquerque before resources could respond.

Location:  East end of Menaul Blvd. about 500 feet up the mountain

Subject:  Two paragliders

Mission Summary:  The subject crashed their paragliders into the side of the mountain.  Both were deemed critical enough to warrant evacuation by helicopter and were sent to UNM Trauma Center.

Mission Summary:  Subjects were hiking from Embudo Trail Head and ran out of water.  Subject A hiked to the Tram and called BCSO.  Subject B was supposed to be waiting at Bart’s Trail & Crest Trail, however he hiked out on Pino Trail and was found at Tramway & Menaul Blvd.

Mission Summary:  Subject went for a day hike starting at lower Tram Terminal.  He got stuck near La Cueva Canyon and called friends. A team of 6 were sent to assist the subject and after spending the night they resumed walking the subject out.

Subject:  A 69 year old Male

Mission Summary:  Subject was distraught over death of best friend.  Due to car trouble, he took off walking to I-40 and hitchhiking to St John’s, AZ.  Teams and aircraft searched all night and at approximately 9:00 District 6 reported he had been found by family members.  His wife and daughter picked him up at a café in Ramah.
He was in good condition.

Mission Summary:  Boy walked away from his grandfather’s house at approximately 10:30.  Mother, neighbors and family searched for about 2 hours - Search and Rescue was notified at 14:00.  The boy was found about ¼ mile from residence by neighbor at about 18:15.  He was examined by medic and released to mother and grandfather.

Mission Summary:  Subject started on a 4 hour hike with 2 ½ hours of daylight left.  They stopped at dark and built a fire to stay warm.  Subjects were found and walked out under their own power.

Mission Summary:  Subject reported he had walked from the Crest parking lot to the top of the Tram and then became disoriented.  He reported that he was under some power lines and a team found him on the North Crest Trail and walked him back to IB.

Mission Summary:  Subject left home at 9:00 on 8/14/2007 to buy gas for “weed whacker”.  Family initiated search about 11:00 when subject did not return.  BCSD and Open Space police began searching then NMSP mission was initiated at 15:44.  The mission was suspended at 22:00 on 8/14/07, resumed at 7:00 on 8/15/07.  Mission was suspended at 17:30 on 8/15/07 with no clues found.  Subject was located by hiker/jogger on 8/18/2007 in the main drain.(“clear ditch”)

Mission Summary:  Subject left home at 7:30 with plans to hike to the second Tram Tower and back.  He became exhausted & dehydrated on return trip then called 911 at approximately 16:45.  Open Space Police & BCFD located, stabilized and walked subject out before any volunteers deployed.

Mission Summary:  Subjects reported they were lost and dehydrated about 14:00.  NMSP 606 spotted the subjects and AMRC hydrated them and returned them to IB.

Mission Summary:  A group of 3 men and 3 women went out for a paintball game.  The women did not participate in the game instead went for a walk.  They were spotted walking south and east near a tree.

Mission Summary:  Report of woman on La Luz Trail with possible broken ankle.  Upon arrival, subject had been helped back to trailhead.  BC Fire Dept determined the ankle was probably not broken and she was advised to seek further medical treatment.

Subject:  Male hiker

Mission Summary:  USFS reported that a young man came into the Crest House and reported that his father was down with difficulty breathing on the trail between there and the tram.  No information was obtained from the reporting party regarding the subject.  911 was called and BCSO, USFS and BCFD searched the trails with no contact.  A group of hikers reported seeing a family supporting a sick individual hiking out.  It was concluded that the subject self-evacuated and left the area.

Mission Summary:  Family went out on a short hike and became lost.  Father left group and went for help.  He was located but could not tell them where he left the family.  Sheriff’s Office located a Valles Caldera worker who drove to where the rest of the party was and brought them out.

Mission Summary:  Tram employees reported a person waving a flashlight and burning sticks at each pass of the tram cars.  BCFD checked out report of fire and found the mother looking for her overdue son who was hiking under the tram cables.

Mission Summary:  Search was for 2 climbers overdue for a climb of the “Needle”.  They were located returning to the Crest parking lot and they were in good condition.

Mission Summary:  Subjects went for a day hike from the lower tram tower to the upper terminal.  Departed on Sandia Trail, turned northward, ended up in the upper reaches of Rosimiento Canyon,  The had sufficient food and water but were not dressed for night time.  Ground team found subjects  - hydrated and medically assessed them and walked them out.

Mission Summary:  Subject reported he was 1 ½ miles below the “Y” on the Crest Spur Trail and that he could not walk any further due to sever hip pain “cramping”.  Teams were dispatched and located the subject.  After being hydrated, fed and rested the teams were able to walk the subject out.

Location:  Intersection of Olympus & Reineer in Rio Rancho, NM

Subject:  Two male 4 wheelers

Teams Responding:  BC ARES, Cibola SAR, NM SAR Support

Mission Summary:  Subjects called 911 to report they had become inextricably stuck.  Sandoval Sheriffs searched using the GPS coordinates from their cell phone.  When they were unable to locate them the SO called NM SAR.  After SAR resources began searching the Sheriff’s Office found the subject and brought them to Incident Base where they were checked out and released.

Subject:  55 year old hiker

Mission Summary:  Subject hiked up La Luz Trail across to upper tram.  Prior to reaching upper tram subject slipped and fell approx 100’.  A second hiker witnessed fall and contacted tram personnel.

Subject:  Female runaway

Mission Summary:  Subject ran away from home after an altercation with her mother & brother.  APD searched using Air 1 with infra red to search Petroglyph Park.  NM SAR was called out to aid in the search.  Albuquerque Public School Police reported they had an alarm at Painted Sky Elementary School.  Subject was found sleeping in the girls restroom and was transported to University Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Subject:  Male Hunter

Mission Summary:  Subject was mountain lion hunting with his friends and became separated.  After spending the night out he called 911 twice giving fake reports that he had a broken leg and frostbite.  When SAR teams located him, he was in good condition and had walked about 5 miles to I-40 and was hitchhiking back to his motel

Mission Summary:  Subject called 911 from public phone in Pilar.  Said he needed ambulance because he was injured from driving off the road.  Search conducted in are around Pilar and along State Rd. 68 with no contact.  Subject was located later in the day at his home in Albuquerque

Mission Summary:  Subjects went on snowshoe hike on Middlefork Trail near Red River.  They were scheduled to be back around 15:00.  Wife of one hiker called SP, but subjects walked out before Resources were contacted.

Mission Summary:  Mission was looking for subject starting around where his truck was found on CR 75.  Witnesses said they gave him a ride down to Española.  Subject has not been found

Mission Summary:  Subjects rafted from Lovato’s Bridge in Colorado to Sheep’s Crossing on the Rio Grande River.  NMSP Officer was stationed at their vehicle and reported they had walked out.

Subject:  Three Vehicle Occupants

Mission Summary:  The vehicle with the occupants rolled over.  One subject was deceased and the other two walked about 11 miles looking for help.  The Ojo Caliente FD found them.

Mission Summary:  Subject drove to unmarked FS Road to dig trees for his boss.  When he didn’t return the Boss and the SO followed the tracks up the road until it became too muddy.  SAR team followed tracks on foot until they encountered a search vehicle coming from the other direction.  No sign of the subject or vehicle and no clues were found.

Mission Summary:  Subjects were rock hounding near Carlisle Mine, were stranded by broken drive shaft on their pickup.  They continued hiking and exploring abandoned mine sites and spent the night about a mile east of truck, became disoriented at daybreak and hiked further from vehicle.  Female left the man at an empty stock tank & continued hiking out.  She was found by a rancher and taken into Virden.  She gave directions to where she had left the male.  NMSP Officer rescued subject and brought him to an ambulance in Virden where he was assessed and treated by local EMT.  Both subjects were then transported to Deming, NM
